About the clothing size converter
Ready-to-wear sizing is a convention rather than a measurement, which is why the same body can be a "M", a "US 8" and an "EU 38" at the same time. The common ground between systems is the body measurement, so that is what this converter matches on.
How to take your measurements
- Bust: measure around the fullest part, keeping the tape level
- Chest: measure around the widest part of the chest, under the arms
- Kids: chest grows evenly with height, so match on chest first

How to convert clothing sizes
Clothing sizes vary by country and, within a country, by brand. International labels from XS to XXL are a rough guide, while the numeric US, UK, EU, Italian, French and Japanese systems each use their own increments and cut-off points. This converter maps between them using commonly published equivalents, so treat the result as a starting point and check the specific brand's own chart before ordering.
Everyday uses
- Buying clothes from an overseas retailer
- Comparing a favourite garment's label with a new brand
- Gift shopping without the recipient present

Frequently asked questions
More worked examples
- A men's jacket in EU 50 is usually labelled a US or UK 40, meaning a 40-inch chest.
- A women's US 8 is commonly charted as a UK 12 and an EU 38, though the gap varies by brand.
- A 32-inch jeans waist is about 81 cm, but vanity sizing means the real measurement is often slightly larger than the label.
- A chest measurement of 96 cm is about 37.8 inches, which sits near the small to medium boundary in many menswear charts.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming clothing sizes are standardised. For most garments there is no binding international standard, so every brand sets its own chart.
- Using your exact body measurement for a garment meant to be layered. Add ease, usually a few centimetres, for jumpers and coats.
- Mixing up the women's US and UK number scales. They differ by about four: a US 8 is usually a UK 12, not a UK 8.
- Trusting the label over the tape measure. Vanity sizing has gradually shifted what each number means over the past few decades.
