Social Media Aspect Ratio
Check an image or video ratio, simplify it and load a platform preset. Enter the dimensions, then press Convert.
About the Social Media Aspect Ratio
Aspect ratio is width divided by height, reduced to the smallest whole numbers. 1080 × 1350 simplifies to 4:5, the portrait format Instagram uses for feed posts. 1920 × 1080 is 16:9, the standard for YouTube and most desktop video.
Platform presets are starting points, not guarantees. Every platform crops differently in feed, profile and search, and safe zones move with interface changes. Keep the subject away from the edges and export a master at the largest size you need rather than upscaling a small file.
How the calculation works
- Ratio = width ÷ height.
- Simplify by dividing both sides by their greatest common divisor.
- Megapixels = width × height ÷ 1,000,000.
- Print size at 300 DPI = pixels ÷ 300 inches.
Reference values
| Platform placement | Ratio | Typical pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram square | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 |
| Instagram portrait | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 |
| Instagram / TikTok story | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 |
| YouTube thumbnail | 16:9 | 1280 × 720 |
| X / Twitter post | 16:9 | 1600 × 900 |
| Facebook link | 1.91:1 | 1200 × 628 |
| Pinterest pin | 2:3 | 1000 × 1500 |
Worked example: three common exports
A 1080 × 1350 Instagram portrait post is 4:5, or 1.458 MP. A 1080 × 1920 Story is 9:16, or 2.074 MP. A 1200 × 628 link preview is 1.91:1. Export each at the platform's native size; upscaling a 1080-wide master to 4K adds no detail and makes the file larger.
Keep important text away from the outer 10% of the frame. Feed crops, profile overlays and interface chrome can cover the edges, and those safe zones change without notice. A master file with a little breathing room is easier to reuse than a tightly cropped one.
Square, portrait and vertical formats
Square posts at 1:1 are the most forgiving because the same file usually works in both feed orientations. Portrait 4:5 uses more vertical space in the feed and is often the best choice for a still image, while 9:16 vertical is built for full-screen stories and short video. Each step away from square increases the chance that a platform crop removes something important.
Design at the tallest ratio you intend to publish, then export the shorter versions from that master by cropping rather than stretching. Stretching changes faces and logos visibly. If the same asset must work in all three, keep the subject centred and put text in the middle third of the frame.
