About the Bigha to Square Feet Converter
Bigha is not a single unit. The pucca bigha used in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and parts of Madhya Pradesh is 1,600 square yards, or 27,225 sq ft, divided into 20 katha. Bengal uses a bigha of about 14,400 sq ft, Assam and West Bengal use different figures again, and Nepal has a bigha of roughly 27,225 sq ft as well. The converter uses the pucca value, which is the most common in property listings and the one the 20-katha relationship assumes.
Because the unit is customary rather than statutory, a sale deed should always state the area in square feet or square metres as well. If a listing quotes bigha, ask which state's definition applies before comparing prices — a Bengal bigha is roughly half a pucca bigha.
How the calculation works
- 1 pucca bigha = 27,225 sq ft = 2,529.285264 m²
- 1 bigha = 20 katha · 1 katha = 1,361.25 sq ft
- Bengal bigha ≈ 14,400 sq ft (0.33 acre)

Worked examples
- 0.5 bigha is 13,613 sq ft, about a third of an acre.
- 3 bigha is 81,675 sq ft, or 1.88 acres, a workable smallholding.
- 20 katha make one pucca bigha, so each katha is 1,361.25 sq ft.
Why the state matters
A Bengal bigha is about 14,400 sq ft, which is 47% smaller than the pucca figure used here. Two listings quoting "2 bigha" can therefore differ by 25,650 sq ft — more than half an acre — before any price comparison is meaningful. Always ask which definition the seller is using.
Common mistakes
- Using the pucca bigha in West Bengal, where the local bigha is roughly half the size.
- Treating bigha as a statutory unit. It is customary, so a deed must also state square feet or square metres.
- Assuming 1 bigha is an acre. It is 0.625 acre in the pucca system.
A last check on the numbers: 37 Bigha (pucca) works out to 1,007,325 Square foot, and reversing that with the same factor brings you back to 37 Bigha (pucca). Because Bigha (pucca) to Square foot is a single multiplication, any tool that gives a different figure for the same input is rounding somewhere in the middle rather than only at the end.
