About the Acres to Hectares Converter

An acre is 43,560 square feet, while a hectare is 10,000 square metres — neither is a round multiple of the other, so the factor 0.4046856422 is worth remembering. Land listings often mix the two: UK and US agents use acres, European and Commonwealth agricultural listings use hectares.

For a quick check, a hectare is about two and a half acres, and a 100-hectare farm is about 247 acres. The reverse shortcut, acres ÷ 2.471, is accurate enough for conversation but not for a contract.

How the calculation works

  • Hectares = acres × 0.4046856422
  • Acres = hectares × 2.4710538147
  • 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft · 1 hectare = 10,000 m²

Worked examples

  • 12 acres × 0.404686 = 4.86 ha, a small mixed farm.
  • 100 acres is 40.47 ha, and 250 acres is 101.17 ha.
  • 1 hectare is 2.471 acres, so 40 ha is 98.8 acres.

Checking the answer by hand

Divide acres by 2.5 for a quick hectare figure and expect it to be about 1.2% low: 100 acres ÷ 2.5 gives 40 ha against an exact 40.47. If your estimate is above the converter, you multiplied instead of divided.

Common mistakes

  • Using 2.5 as the exact factor. Over 1,000 acres the shortcut is 12 acres out.
  • Quoting hectares for a UK listing that is priced per acre, then comparing the totals without converting.
  • Confusing hectares with square metres — one hectare is 10,000 m², not 1,000.

A last check on the numbers: 37 Acre works out to 14.97 Hectare, and reversing that with the same factor brings you back to 37 Acre. Because Acre to Hectare is a single multiplication, any tool that gives a different figure for the same input is rounding somewhere in the middle rather than only at the end.
