About the cm to feet Converter
Height is the one place where feet and inches are almost always used together: nobody says 5.74 feet. Divide centimetres by 30.48 for the decimal feet, then take the fraction and multiply by 12 to get the inches part. This converter reports the decimal feet and the site's tables show both.
The conversion is exact because a foot is 0.3048 m by definition, but heights quoted in feet and inches are usually rounded to the nearest inch, which is a 2.54 cm jump — larger than the rounding error of the conversion itself.
How the calculation works
- Feet = centimetres ÷ 30.48
- Centimetres = feet × 30.48
- Inches part = (decimal feet − whole feet) × 12

Worked examples
- 163 cm ÷ 30.48 = 5.348 ft, which is 5 ft 4.2 in.
- 178 cm is 5.840 ft, or 5 ft 10.1 in.
- 193 cm is 6.332 ft, or 6 ft 4.0 in — a common basketball guard height.
Converting the inches part
Divide by 30.48 to get decimal feet, keep the whole number, then multiply the remainder by 12. For 178 cm the decimal is 5.840: the 5 is the feet, and 0.840 × 12 = 10.1 in. Rounding 5.840 to 5.8 before that step loses almost half an inch.
Common mistakes
- Writing 5.84 feet as "5 ft 84 in". The fraction must be multiplied by 12 first.
- Reporting 5 ft 12 in instead of rounding up to 6 ft 0 in.
- Assuming a foot is 30 cm. The 0.48 cm difference is 1.6%, which is 2.8 cm on a 1.8 m person.
A last check on the numbers: 37 Centimetre works out to 1.214 Foot, and reversing that with the same factor brings you back to 37 Centimetre. Because Centimetre to Foot is a single multiplication, any tool that gives a different figure for the same input is rounding somewhere in the middle rather than only at the end.
