Gaj to Square Feet Converter
Enter gaj and press Convert to get square feet. One gaj is 9 sq ft, so a 100 gaj plot is 900 sq ft.
About the Gaj to Square Feet Converter
Gaj is the everyday word for a square yard in North India, and a square yard is 9 sq ft. Plots in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh are routinely advertised in gaj — a 100 gaj plot is 900 sq ft, a 200 gaj plot is 1,800 sq ft, and so on.
Because gaj is a square measure of a linear yard, the arithmetic is clean: divide square feet by 9, or multiply gaj by 9. One gaj is also 0.83612736 m², which is close to but not exactly a square metre.
How the calculation works
- 1 gaj = 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft = 0.83612736 m²
- sq ft = gaj × 9
- 1 acre = 4,840 gaj
Reference values
| Gaj (sq yd) | Square feet | Square metres |
|---|---|---|
| 50 gaj | 450 sq ft | 41.81 m² |
| 100 gaj | 900 sq ft | 83.61 m² |
| 150 gaj | 1,350 sq ft | 125.42 m² |
| 200 gaj | 1,800 sq ft | 167.23 m² |
| 250 gaj | 2,250 sq ft | 209.03 m² |
| 500 gaj | 4,500 sq ft | 418.06 m² |
| 1,000 gaj | 9,000 sq ft | 836.13 m² |
Worked examples
- 60 gaj is 540 sq ft, a small residential plot in Gurugram.
- 120 gaj is 1,080 sq ft, a typical builder floor plot.
- 300 gaj is 2,700 sq ft, about 0.062 acre.
Checking the answer by hand
Multiply gaj by 9. For 250 gaj that is 2,250 sq ft. Going back, divide square feet by 9: a 1,800 sq ft plot is 200 gaj. Because gaj means square yard, the factor is exactly 9, not approximately.
Common mistakes
- Treating gaj as a linear yard. One gaj is 9 sq ft, so a "100 gaj" plot is 900 sq ft, not 100.
- Confusing gaj with square metre. One gaj is 0.836 m².
- Comparing a gaj price with a square-foot price without converting, which makes the gaj plot look nine times cheaper.
A last check on the numbers: 37 Square yard (gaj) works out to 333 Square foot, and reversing that with the same factor brings you back to 37 Square yard (gaj). Because Square yard (gaj) to Square foot is a single multiplication, any tool that gives a different figure for the same input is rounding somewhere in the middle rather than only at the end.
