About the Height Converter — cm, Feet and Inches
Height is the one measurement almost always written as feet and inches together, which is why people search for a specific value (“5'9 in cm”) rather than for a converter. The chart answers all of those queries at once, and the converter handles anything outside it.
The arithmetic is exact but the rounding is not: heights are usually quoted to the nearest inch, and an inch is 2.54 cm, so 175 cm becomes 5 ft 8.9 in and is normally written as 5 ft 9 in.
How the calculation works
- Centimetres = feet × 30.48
- Centimetres = inches × 2.54
- Feet and inches = whole feet, then (cm ÷ 30.48 − feet) × 12

Worked examples
- 5 ft 2 in is 157.5 cm, and 5 ft 11 in is 180.3 cm.
- 6 ft 2 in is 188.0 cm, a common basketball guard height.
- 4 ft 11 in is 149.9 cm, just under the 150 cm mark many charts start at.
Reading a height chart correctly
Charts round to the nearest inch, but an inch is 2.54 cm, so a single chart row covers a 2.54 cm band. Someone measuring 174 cm sits between 5 ft 8 in (172.7) and 5 ft 9 in (175.3) and is normally written as 5 ft 9 in. That rounding is why two converters can disagree by an inch without either being wrong.
Common mistakes
- Writing 5.75 feet as "5 ft 75 in" — the fraction must be multiplied by 12.
- Measuring in the evening. Height varies by up to 2 cm through the day as spinal discs compress.
- Converting a height in shoes and reporting it as a barefoot measurement.
A last check on the numbers: 37 Centimetre works out to 1.214 Foot, and reversing that with the same factor brings you back to 37 Centimetre. Because Centimetre to Foot is a single multiplication, any tool that gives a different figure for the same input is rounding somewhere in the middle rather than only at the end.
