km/h to mph Converter
Enter a speed in km/h and press Convert to get mph - that is kmh to mph in one step. 100 km/h is 62.14 mph; 60 mph is 96.56 km/h.
About the km/h to mph Converter
Both units measure the same thing over different distances: a kilometre is 0.621371 miles, so km/h to mph is a straight multiply with no offset. The conversion is exact in the sense that both the mile and the hour are defined quantities, so any rounding you see comes from the display.
The mental shortcut worth memorising is that 100 km/h is a shade over 62 mph, and 60 mph is a shade under 97 km/h. Speed limits in the UK and US are in mph while most of Europe, Australia and Canada post km/h.
How the calculation works
- mph = km/h × 0.6213711922
- km/h = mph × 1.609344
- 1 km/h = 0.277778 m/s · 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s
Reference values
| km/h | mph | Typical context |
|---|---|---|
| 30 km/h | 18.64 mph | Urban limit (Europe) |
| 50 km/h | 31.07 mph | Town limit |
| 80 km/h | 49.71 mph | Rural road |
| 100 km/h | 62.14 mph | Motorway minimum |
| 120 km/h | 74.56 mph | Motorway limit |
| 130 km/h | 80.78 mph | French autoroute |
| 200 km/h | 124.27 mph | Fast train / car |
| 300 km/h | 186.41 mph | High-speed rail |
Worked examples
- 90 km/h × 0.621371 = 55.92 mph, a typical urban motorway speed.
- 50 km/h is 31.07 mph, the standard town limit in Europe.
- 250 km/h is 155.34 mph, the usual limiter on a German saloon.
Checking the answer by hand
Halve the km/h figure and add a quarter of that half: 120 km/h becomes 60 plus 15, which is 75 mph against an exact 74.56. The estimate is within 1%, and if it comes out below the converter's answer you multiplied rather than divided.
Common mistakes
- Treating 60 mph and 100 km/h as the same. They differ by 3.4 km/h, enough to matter at a speed camera.
- Using 0.6 as the factor for long distances, which accumulates a 3.5% error.
- Converting a speed limit but not the odometer, then wondering why the distance looks wrong.
A last check on the numbers: 37 Kilometre per hour works out to 22.99 Mile per hour, and reversing that with the same factor brings you back to 37 Kilometre per hour. Because Kilometre per hour to Mile per hour is a single multiplication, any tool that gives a different figure for the same input is rounding somewhere in the middle rather than only at the end.
