The formula applies to the ten-point CGPA printed on the VTU grade card.

About the VTU CGPA to Percentage Calculator

VTU's conversion subtracts 0.75 from the CGPA and multiplies by 10, which is a linear mapping from the ten-point scale onto percentages: a CGPA of 0.75 maps to 0%, 5.0 maps to 42.5% and 10.0 maps to 92.5%. The offset exists because VTU's grade points are not the percentages divided by ten — the 0.75 shift accounts for the difference between the grade bands.

Because the formula is linear, small CGPA changes move the percentage by ten times as much: a 0.1 CGPA improvement is a full percentage point. Employers and universities that ask for a percentage usually accept the value from this formula as long as it matches the conversion certificate issued by the college.

How the calculation works

  • Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
  • CGPA = (Percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75
  • 8.4 CGPA → (8.4 − 0.75) × 10 = 76.5%

Worked examples

  • 7.2 CGPA → (7.2 − 0.75) × 10 = 64.5%.
  • 8.6 CGPA → 78.5%.
  • 9.4 CGPA → 86.5%, a first class with distinction band.

Why the offset exists

VTU grade points are not percentages divided by ten. The lowest passing grade point already corresponds to a passing percentage, so the mapping needs an intercept as well as a slope. Subtracting 0.75 before multiplying by ten puts the grade bands back onto the percentage bands the university publishes, which is why 10 CGPA becomes 92.5% rather than 100%.

Common mistakes

  • Applying the 9.5 multiplier to a VTU CGPA. That gives 76% for an 8.0 where VTU's own formula gives 72.5%.
  • Using the newer − 0.5 Anna University offset, which belongs to a different university.
  • Rounding the CGPA before applying the formula, which shifts the percentage by a full point per 0.1.

A last check on the VTU CGPA table: 5.0 42.5% sits at the base of the chart, and the rows above it step in the same proportion, so you can scale from that first row instead of reading every line. If a figure you were quoted falls between two rows, it is the Percentage side that has been rounded, not the conversion itself.

Frequently asked questions

(CGPA − 0.75) × 10. A CGPA of 8.4 is therefore 76.5%.
It aligns the ten-point grade bands with the percentage bands the university uses, so a given percentage maps back to the CGPA that produced it.
No. VTU's formula gives 92.5% at 10 CGPA, because 10 is the top of the grade scale rather than 100%.
