About the Square Feet to Square Metres Converter
Property listings are the main reason people need this: floor areas are quoted in square feet in the US, UK and India, and in square metres across most of Europe. Because the conversion is squared, a linear shortcut such as dividing by 3.28 is wrong — the factor is 0.09290304.
A useful anchor is that 100 sq ft is 9.29 m², so roughly 10.76 sq ft to the square metre. A 1,200 sq ft flat is about 111.5 m², not the 111 a linear estimate would suggest.
How the calculation works
- m² = ft² × 0.09290304
- ft² = m² × 10.7639104167
- 1 ft² = 144 in² = 0.09290304 m²
Reference values

Worked examples
- A 650 sq ft one-bedroom is 60.39 m².
- 1,200 sq ft is 111.48 m², a typical three-bedroom flat.
- 2,000 sq ft is 185.81 m², a large detached house.
Checking the answer by hand
Divide by 10.76. For 800 sq ft that is 74.35 m². A useful anchor: 100 sq ft is 9.29 m², so roughly 10.76 sq ft per square metre. If your answer is close to the square-foot figure divided by three, you used the linear factor.
Common mistakes
- Dividing by 3.28, which overstates area by about 8%.
- Comparing carpet area in one unit with built-up area in another, which differs by 15-25% before conversion.
- Rounding to whole square metres for a valuation — at 111.48 m², rounding to 111 is a half-percent change.
A last check on the numbers: 37 Square foot works out to 3.437 Square metre, and reversing that with the same factor brings you back to 37 Square foot. Because Square foot to Square metre is a single multiplication, any tool that gives a different figure for the same input is rounding somewhere in the middle rather than only at the end.
