About the area converter

Area is a two-dimensional measurement, so conversion factors are the square of the corresponding length factors. That is why one square metre equals 10.7639 square feet rather than 3.28. This tool keeps that maths invisible for you.

Handy area facts

  • 1 square metre = 10.7639 square feet
  • 1 acre = 4,046.8564 m² = 43,560 ft²
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.47105 acres
  • 1 square mile = 640 acres = 2.58999 km²
  • 1 are = 100 m²

Acre, hectare and square metre quick answers

Acre questions arrive in two shapes: a single value to convert (1 acre in square meters, square meters to square feet) or a pair to compare (acre to hectare, hectare to acre). Both are the same factor applied in opposite directions. One acre is 4,046.86 m² and 0.404686 hectare, so 1 hectare in acres is 2.47105 and acre to sq ft is 43,560. In the traditional units used across South Asia, the same acre is 100 decimal, 60.5 Bengal katha or 3.025 Bengal bigha.

Regional land units (bigha, katha, decimal and shotok)

Property and farmland across Bangladesh, Nepal and eastern India is still bought and sold in units that never appear on a metric chart. The figures below are the standard Dhaka and West Bengal values, which are what most listings use.

Regional exceptions matter: a katha is roughly 1,620 sq ft in parts of Rajshahi, and in Assam one bigha equals 5 katha rather than 20. There is no single nationwide answer, so confirm the district before a transaction.

How to convert area

Area measures a two-dimensional surface. Because the units are squared, conversion factors are squared too: one foot is 0.3048 metres, so one square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 square metres. That is why an acre works out to exactly 4,046.8564224 m², and why a hectare — a square measuring 100 m on each side — is exactly 10,000 m². Multiplying a squared factor by the wrong power is the most common mistake in area conversions.

Frequently asked questions

Exactly 43,560 ft², which is 4,046.8564224 m² or 0.40468564 hectares.
1 hectare (10,000 m²) is about 2.4710538 acres.
No. An acre is simply 43,560 ft²; the traditional dimensions are one chain (66 ft) by one furlong (660 ft), a long thin rectangle.
Multiply by 10.76391 — the square of the 3.28084 feet in a metre.
720 sq ft (66.89 m²) under the Bangladesh and West Bengal standard, which is about 1.653 decimal and one sixteenth of a bigha. Parts of Rajshahi use a larger katha of roughly 1,620 sq ft.
20 katha, or 14,400 sq ft — about 33.06 decimal and roughly a third of an acre. In Assam the bigha is only 5 katha, so check the region.
435.6 sq ft (40.47 m²). A decimal, shotok or shotangsho is simply one hundredth of an acre, so 100 decimal make 1 acre and 1 acre is 100 decimal.

More worked examples

  • A room 12 m by 10 m is 120 m², which is about 1,291.67 sq ft.
  • A 1,500 sq ft apartment is about 139.35 m².
  • One acre is 4,046.86 m², or exactly 43,560 sq ft.
  • One hectare is 10,000 m², which is about 2.47105 acres.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating area factors like length factors. One metre is 3.28084 feet, but one square metre is 10.7639 square feet, because the factor is squared.
  • Picturing an acre as a square. It is 43,560 sq ft, historically the area a team of oxen could plough in a day, so it is a long thin strip.
  • Assuming land units such as the bigha, katha, decimal, shotok or guntha are universal. Their size varies by country and often by district.
  • Using hectare and acre as if they were close. A hectare is about 2.47 acres, so the difference is large over a whole field.

Further questions

Because one metre is 3.28084 feet, and area scales with the square of the length factor: 3.28084 × 3.28084 = 10.7639.
An acre is 4,046.86 m² and a hectare is 10,000 m², so one hectare is about 2.47 acres. The hectare is metric and used in most of the world.
A traditional South Asian land unit with no single standard value. Depending on the region it ranges from roughly 1,600 to 27,000 square feet, so always confirm the local definition.

Sources and standards

Area factors are squared lengths, so they follow from the metre and from the exact customary lengths in NIST SP 811. The international acre is 4,046.8564224 m², derived from the 1959 yard; the older US survey acre differs by about four parts per million, which matters only in boundary surveys.

How many square feet in an acre

There are exactly 43,560 square feet in an acre, which is also 4,046.86 square metres, 4,840 square yards and 0.404686 hectares. A quarter acre is 10,890 sq ft and half an acre is 21,780 sq ft.
